Confession: the 8:00 a.m. start time for mentors on a work day was not easy, even if the orange juice was delicious. The good news? Monroe College’s Third Annual Male Empowerment Event was well worth the trouble.
100 young males from disconnected neighborhoods gathered for what could only be described as a “role model day.” A diverse group of professional men showed up bright and early and ready to share any insights, tips, and even humor with boys who more often than not, weren’t privy to one on one time with successful role models. The format of the day included a riveting keynote speaker, as well as a panel of mentors who each shared the best piece of advice they have ever received. The casual, yet friendly event ended with a singular call, stay in touch, who knows the person at your table could be a great mentor.
